Sylvia L. Stroud

Sylvia is familiar with being outstanding as she was one of the 2009 Outstanding Apprentice Award recipients.  She is a barber who wants to climb all the way up the ladder to being an educator and a shop owner.  Sylvia has had a lifetime of tutoring others in a variety of different settings.  That is partially why becoming an educator is appealing to her.   Sylvia would like to be living proof that apprenticeship can be a stepping stone to bigger and better things.

Donald E. Rickerson, III

Donald is currently studying marine technology at the Webb Institute where he has also found chapters of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and the Marine Technology Society.  He has participated in many technical meetings and conferences and this networking has introduced him to current and innovative methods of engineering analysis.  He finds the academic environment challenging and enlightening.  Donald previously was a Northorp Grumman employee before this journey and he plans on returning to their Engineering Department after receiving his degree.

Darold S. Kemp, president of the VAAA and chairman of the Virginia Apprenticeship Council, recently announced that this year's scholarship program will include three scholarship awards of $1,000 each.  This is an increase over last year, when the Association awarded one scholarship.

All individual members in good standing should consider applying for these scholarships.  Remember the VAAA membership period is May 1 through April 30 of each year.  You must be a 2010 member to be eligible.

The scholarship funds may be used to support a member's educational development and training.  The scholarship monies can be used over a two-year period from the date of the award.  Funds will be paid directly to the institution or agency where the instruction is taken.  The VAAA looks forward to supporting active apprentices as they complete their related academic instruction, and apprentice graduates as they continue their education and training beyond apprenticeship to enhance their working careers.

Please complete the Application for VAAA Scholarship 2010 and mail to the address indicated at the bottom of the form.  Be sure to include your narrative of 1,000 words or less, detailing how the scholarship funds will help you achieve your education and training goals.

The deadline for submitting your application is May 31, 2010, as determined by receipt or postmark date.
